Training Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Dogs
Before we begin, we want to mention that the training program described here is not only well suited to the average family dog but it is especially appropriate for deaf dogs. We know the challenges normally associated with training hearing-impaired dogs because we are often asked by their owners if we can help train them. From our discussions with these owners we have learned that they have very few effective options to teach their dogs to come when called with a high degree of reliability. However, this skill is critical to the safety and well-being of all dogs. Following our directions, the vast majority of dog owners will notice their dogs beginning to look at them more and more. The dogs âcheck inâ to see if anything is needed. And ultimately for deaf dogs, the e-collar vibration or tap merely informs the dog that he is to look around and find his owner. Because all of the commands herein include body language as well as a verbal command, deaf dogs will naturally and easily learn what youâre asking them to do. Just accentuate the hand signals slightly.
As they become senior citizens, many dogs lose significant hearing. One of Marcâs dogs, a German shepherd named Sheena, started going deaf at age nine. But she was still able to enjoy off-leash life at Marcâs fenced Little Dog Farm because Sheena had been trained with our method and she easily learned to come back inside after a jaunt when Marc vibrated her collar. We trained a dog named Keller who was both deaf and blind from birth. Yet Keller had an amazing nose. She was able to map and navigate her surroundings by scent. This remarkable dog learned to come when called with a tap of vibration that caused her to begin scenting for us. Dogs are incredibly intelligent, and we believe the training plan here respects that intelligence and partners with it.
