Managing Tails
Because you change weft colors a lot in tapestry weaving, tails are created wherever the wefts start and stop. There are a variety of ways to deal with these tails, including splicing or feathering weft ends, working in the ends with a needle when the piece comes off the loom, or leaving tails on the back of the piece and tying them together into small bundles during the finishing process.
When youâre deciding which way to manage your tails, keep in mind that not all yarns act the same way. A fuzzier wool weft will grab onto its neighboring wefts and create a cohesive textile. The cut weft ends of these kinds of yarn are less likely to work to the front of the tapestry. If you use a smoother wool yarn or a smooth fiber like silk or cotton, cut tails close to the surface of the work can work out over time and show on the front.
