The shrine and diya played a big part in the story, acting as a sort of gateway to Little Sanjay’s Eastern culture. All of the surface details foretell the dreamlike sequences that occur later in the film. We also wanted to contrast the look of the shrine with the TV. The light of the shrine is calm and natural, while the TV is vivid and artificial. The shrine’s wood and paint were designed to feel aged and unique compared to the TV’s generic manufactured appearance.

The mural that graces the inner walls of the shrine is inspired by the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. The cosmic tug of war between the deities and demons seemed like the perfect backdrop for the father/ son culture clash.
