HOW TO SHOOT A FILM TO ACHIEVE THE CREATOR’S VISION

For this landmark film, rated X (along with A Clockwork Orange) for violence, Sam Peckinpah brought an arsenal of cinematic tools. These included multiple cameras, many able to shoot in various frame rates of slow motion. The cameras were placed in six to eight key positions, such as in the bank, on the street, and on rooftops. Some positions were locked off; others were handheld, in the days before the Steadicam, when the widescreen cameras were still very heavy. The scene employs rapid montage, inspired by the Russians, now called montage-driven cutting. Peckinpah, Oliver Stone, John Woo, Quentin Tarantino, and Akira Kurosawa are all from this school. Peckinpah made sure the camera positions were set up so he could intercut several layers of action at the same time. For the majority of the film, Peckinpah creates a tableau style of storytelling with Walon Green’s screenplay, as well as many flashbacks, a structure that moved back and forth in time. The original release time for The Wild Bunch was 134 minutes. It was later cut to 120 minutes for the usual reason of getting more shows in per day, but also because of the excessive mayhem, chaos, blood, and guts.
