Chapter 6

Power Pumping

Power pumping is an inducing technique that encourages the breasts to produce more milk at an increased rate by mimicking the frequent nursing of an infant who is experiencing a growth spurt. At this time in an infant’s life, he or she will often suckle more frequently, more vigorously, and for longer periods of time, which triggers an increased release of prolactin from the pituitary gland, sending the “make more milk more quickly” message to the nursing woman’s breasts.

To effectively power pump, begin by choosing one hour every day (for example, 8 a.m.), and then follow this pumping pattern:

1.Pump for 20 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes.

2.Pump for another 10 minutes. Rest for 10 minutes.

3.Pump an additional 10 minutes. Finish.

This provides 40 minutes of pumping in a 60 minute period of time. Throughout the day, you should continue using your other lactation inducing techniques (suckling, hand expression, traditional pumping, and/or TENS stimulation) to help the process along. Many women find that implementing this technique on three consecutive days is sufficient in increasing their milk supply while others choose to power pump for longer periods of time, typically seven consecutive days.

Most women see an increase in their milk supply 48 hours to one week after they begin their power pump routine, but don’t be discouraged if your body responds a bit slower to this lactation technique. Perseverance and consistency are key factors in this milk making method.

To use an alternative method of the technique dubbed “Power Pumping Boot Camp”, you can perform four of these sessions each day for two days before resuming your regular pumping routine. Because proper rest is vital to breast milk production, you should not set an alarm to wake you to pump through the night.

Clock-watching and alarm-setting to be certain that you are power pumping for the proper amount of time is stressful, and stress impedes milk production, so get comfortable and relax as you pump by watching your favorite movie and pumping during one scene before resting during the next, or enjoying a television show and pumping through the commercials. You can even put on a favorite CD and pump while listening to two songs before resting through the next two.

To effectively power pump, it is best to use a good quality medical-grade electric breast pump, which handles this lactation inducing technique much more quickly and efficiently than a manual pump, as you can set functions and cycles to closely mimic the suckling patterns of a growing infant.

No matter the inducing method you use, always remember to be persistent and patient. Your desired level of lactation awaits--it may simply take some time to get there!
