Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.30

An open heart is not an unprotected heart—quite the opposite. It requires a stronger and healthier membrane than ever before. True openness is only possible if we are guarded by membranes that honour who we are, that nourish and protect us so we can actively express our authentic DNA.

An open heart is also not the end of the journey to authenticity. The centre is not the final destination of the labyrinth. Rather, it is the midpoint. If we stop at this midway point and stay at the centre, we become self-absorbed and our vocations remain unfulfilled. Our DNA might find expression, but we won’t contribute to the functioning of a healthy collective. To be true to that vocation and really live authentically, we need to make the Outward Journey and return from the centre.

Self-help books sometimes fall short by encouraging only the Inward Journey to the self, and not the Outward Journey back to community. This is not a true fulfillment of who we are. This isn’t to say we need to rush away from the centre. Sometimes, in fact, we need to spend a good long time there to prepare ourselves for what is to come. But eventually we must leave the comfort and safety to follow the voice that’s beckoning—calling us to connection and service.
