Reap the rewards

Thanks to the tips given in the previous section, you have worked on your ethos and have managed to create a personal connection with the other person and made them trust you. You have given your speech legitimacy. It is time to run through your argument and put forward your view of things.

Express your needs

Convincing somebody means trying to make them adopt your point of view on a situation, project or idea. In other words, you want to win them over to your cause. To do this, sooner or later you have to stop the introductions and express your needs. Why does this essential step only come into play at this stage of the argument? Would it not be more effective to immediately ask for what you want? No, because that is like running a 100-metre race without warming up beforehand: it is more than likely that you will strain yourself. Making the other person feel positively towards you has taken care of this, and so now your request will have more of an impact.

Now, develop your point of view in a clear and structured manner, using both the logos and pathos registers to be most effective.
