SHADING AND CONTOURING A BASIC LESSON

While we will be covering shading and contouring in more detail in the advanced makeup books, it helps to understand a little bit about this important makeup technique.

Our face is not flat. Rather, it is two dimensional, with “peaks” and “valleys”.

For example the corner of our eye can be likened to a “valley” and our lids to the ‘Peak”.

For photographic quality makeup, professional artists contour the “valleys” and highlight the “peaks” to bring out the face’s natural bone structure and make it appear more prominent in the photos.

Since dark colours recede or deepen they are used for contouring, while highlighting is done with light shimmer colours to make highlighted areas (such as the brow bone) come forward.
