Eat Together

In the US, only 38 percent of Gen Zers and 46 percent of Millennials say they grew up having daily meals with their families, compared with 59 percent of Gen Xers, 76 percent of Baby Boomers, and 84 percent of the Silent Generation.14 That’s a clear decline over time in how often families sit down and eat together.

Anne Fishel, who directs the Family and Couples Therapy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and teaches at Harvard Medical School, cofounded the Family Dinner Project to encourage more parents to make mealtime a priority. “As a family therapist, I often have the impulse to tell families to go home and have dinner together rather than spending an hour with me,” she has written, because “dinner is the most reliable way for families to connect and find out what’s going on with each other.”15

Make family meals a priority. And if you don’t have kids or don’t live near your parents, for instance, try a “family” dinner tradition with friends, neighbors, or your partner at least once a week.
