In order to explore the attributes of the other Archangels, we need to decide upon a single list from the many that exist. The earliest Christian references are in the early sixth century; Church Fathers from Pope Saint Gregory to Pseudo-Dionysius all compiled lists of the seven Archangels. Each of these lists included the three mentioned in Scripture—Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

Keeping in mind the great variety of names, there is a devotional tradition of associating the seven Archangels with the seven Sacraments of the Church. This is not doctrine, but provides a list of names for us to explore. According to one tradition, the list of Archangels includes Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Zerachiel, and Remiel. They are associated with the following Sacraments: Michael is the Patron of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist; Gabriel is the Patron of the Sacrament of Baptism; Raphael is the Patron of the Sacrament of Reconciliation; Uriel is the Patron of the Sacrament of Confirmation; Raguel is the Patron of the Sacrament of Holy Orders; Zerachiel is the Patron of the Sacrament of Matrimony; and Remiel is the Patron of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
