1. the unwritten laws of savage warfare. Barrie ignores here the many contemporary written accounts about “savage” warfare, which were recorded during centuries of conflict with Native Americans. For many European, British, and American observers, Native American warfare was ordinarily limited to raids and ambushes rather than decisive battles and conquests. Casualty rates were low, and actual warfare was ritualized and restrained rather than carried out with the intent of slaughter. The stereotype of the “wily savage” developed among white settlers as a defense against the physical superiority of Native American warriors, their knowledge of the terrain, and their strategic use of dress—with moccasins making far less noise than marching boots. Against the force of European and British weapons and arsenals, Native Americans had a chance only when they “took advantage of terrain and cover, used surprise, maneuver, sound planning, and excellent intelligence” (Deloria and Salisbury 164).

2. Geo. Scourie, Chas. Turley, and the Alsatian Foggerty. Geo. Scourie was named after George Ross—son of the innkeeper of Scourie Lodge, on the northwest coast of Scotland, whom the Llewelyn Davies boys befriended when they spent their holiday at Scourie Lodge in the summer of 1911. Chas. Turley is Charles Turley Smith, who wrote school stories for boys.

3. It was Peter’s cockiness. Peter’s triumphant crowing deepens Hook’s sense of the boy’s narcissistic vanity. When Hook encounters the sleeping Peter Pan, it is, once again, his “cockiness” that drives Hook into a homicidal frenzy. Hook’s strange obsession with Peter has deep mythological roots in father/son rivalries, but here it takes an odd turn suggesting something more than a familial relationship.
