CHAPTER 14

Jane woke up from the best night’s sleep she’d had for some time. She looked at the clock to see that it was six thirty. Tillie was babbling to herself in her bedroom. Since she’d woken early and it didn’t seem cold, Jane decided to take Tillie for a walk after breakfast.

After a quick shower, Jane pulled on her day dress and unpinned her long hair. Once she was dressed and had redone her hair, she walked into Tillie’s room to see her standing up, hanging onto the railing of her crib.

“You don’t have a care in the world, do you?”

Tillie reached her arms up and Jane leaned down and pulled her out of the crib. Then she changed Tillie’s diaper and dressed her for the day before they headed downstairs.

Even though Saturday was the same as any other workday, it always felt different. Things seemed slower and more relaxed somehow, and Jane was more tempted to have a rest in between times rather than continue with the frantic pace she kept up every weekday. After a breakfast of eggs and toast, she placed a blanket around Tillie before placing her in her stroller.

She pushed the stroller over the small white pebbles of the driveway to the wide road where there was plenty of room to move to one side if she happened to see a buggy or a car. Tillie was sitting upright, staring around about her.

Putting chores and work out of her mind, Jane enjoyed being out in the early morning sun and watching the soft light filter through the low branches of the trees. Everything seemed more positive and brighter when the sun was out, even though the morning air was chilly.

The walk cleared her mind and if it weren’t so cold, she would’ve gone further. “That’s it, Tillie. We’ll walk again tomorrow if it’s a nice day.” She turned the stroller around and headed back.

When they were level with the back of Adam’s haus, she saw Japheth hitching Adam’s buggy.

Japheth looked up and saw her. “Hi, Jane.”

“Hello. You’re having an early start.”

“Yeah. I’m helping Micah Stoltzfus repair the roof of his barn.”

“That’s good of you.”

“On my way, I’ll post that letter of yours if you have it ready.”

“I do. I’ll just get it for you.”

Jane headed to the house, left Tillie in the stroller at the bottom of the stairs, ran inside, grabbed the letter that was already sealed and stamped, and hurried out again. She pushed Tillie back to where Japheth was and stood there watching him adjust the horse’s harness.

He looked at her and smiled, then he walked over to crouch down and talk to Tillie. Tillie reached out to him and he held up his hands. “I can’t touch you after I’ve been touching the horse. Your Mamm wouldn’t be too happy with me.” He glanced over at Jane as he stood up.

“You’ve got that right. Here’s the letter.”

“Good. I hope this is all that’s needed.”

“Me too. You’ll be gone for the whole day?”

“Possibly.
