It’s not surprising that my salvation would come in the form of a man.

After all, a man created me. A man died for my sins. Eight men at Watchtower headquarters told me what kind of man I should marry, and how I ought to spend my time. The man I married was in charge of me, and the men in the congregation delivered sermons to me each week at the Kingdom Hall. Men wrote the books I read. Men told me I should let the men in the congregation do the speaking, and that I should wear long skirts. Three men sat in judgment of me when I confessed to sin (with a man, naturally), and deemed whether I was repentant enough to be allowed to speak to my family and friends. When I wasn’t, three men sat in judgment a year later when I begged to be let back in.

I was at work one day when a man wrote me an e-mail. He was one of our podcast listeners and had just had his first Chinese lesson with one of our teachers over Skype. I had helped him coordinate the lesson with the teacher, and he wrote to tell me how it had gone:
