Chapter Nine

The next month passed with quiet serenity, the days rolling by with the

routine that both Kirith and Landon had fallen into.

Landon now got up to run with Kirith, though he had convinced the other

man to move the activity to five instead of four. Even that had been a

struggle. Kirith had no love affair with the sun; his pale skin burned easily,

and Landon could not help but wonder why he had not inherited any of the

sun tolerant bronze skin of his Italian father. Even more, he wondered why

someone who really had no liking for heat would choose a Caribbean island of

all places to reside. It seemed a little strange, but Kirith never offered any

explanation, though Landon had tried often enough to wheedle it out of him.

Indeed Kirith never spoke of his background, his family, or anything

regarding his past. It seemed a closed book, and Landon hated the strain any

mention of it put on Kirith’s face.

He dropped the subject entirely after a while, feeling it had little bearing

on the present. Everyone had their secrets; certainly in mercenary circles,

even true names were rare, and nobody offered any information on

themselves. So Landon didn’t find Kirith’s reticence particularly odd.

After their run, they would sit on the veranda and share breakfast, a

peaceful, relaxing part of the day that both enjoyed. It always seemed that

anything was possible with the beginning of a new day, and it was hard to

think of dark or foreboding matters when the view was so beautiful, the

company so comfortable. There was often laughter at the table, something

that had been rarely heard before Landon’s arrival. Even the guards seemed

to soften somewhat toward him, and their hostility became muted or not even

present at all, though they were vigilant, as they should be.

Lunch was often taken with Laura present, and Landon became more

comfortable with the little girl, began to understand her. On her part, she

seemed to like Landon more and more as they spent time together, thought of

him as an older brother. She even teased him in her childish way, and

Landon would respond as though she had really got him, which pleased her

no end.

Supper was with the three of them together again, a sharing of love and

laughter, then it became common for both Kirith and Landon to see her

tucked into bed. Kirith encouraged Landon to read a story to Laura, since it

improved his literary skills, and certainly Laura seemed to appreciate his

efforts.

It almost seemed like they were becoming a little family of sorts.

Kirith could not help but notice this, and it brought a small warmth to

the coldness that encased his very being. If only…but he knew too well that

hopes were just that. Nothing more. Landon was content for the moment, but

how long until he grew restless here? He was young and had his entire life

before him. Why would he want to stay here, of all places?

They were walking beside each other in the relative coolness as the sun

began to descend toward the horizon. The lush greenery of the inner island

provided sanctuary and blessed relief from
