You can mulch with lots of different materials: straw, bark chippings, hay, newspaper, grass clippings, compost… anything biodegradable will usually work. Just about the only thing you can’t mulch is seeds and seedlings as the mulch will usually scorch the tender immature leaves and soft stems of seedlings and kill them off. Mulching is a vital step to reducing the amount of watering you have to do, so it’s worth planning ahead and researching how you can mulch each of the crops that you intend to grow – most allotment books give some idea of which mulches will work for which plants, but local knowledge is the best source: ask established growers for their tips and keep a record of your successes and failures so you can improve on your productivity year on year.
