Fig 5.18 This cockpit opening has been protected with soft facial tissues topped with a coat of Maskol to seal the edges.

Fig 5.19 Aerosol cans of grey primer offer a fast way of undercoating a model and the chance to gain experience using spray paints.

The key to using spray cans is to shake them vigorously so that the agitator inside rattles around mixing the paint, solvent and propellant together. Begin by spraying ahead of the model and continue past before stopping – if you start and stop on the model, you may end up with spatters from paint that has collected on the nozzle. Always work in light coats – some spray paints dry very fast, so you can reapply another coat sometimes in a matter of 10 or 15 minutes. Always observe safety precautions when using spray cans. After use, invert the can and continue spraying until no paint comes out of the nozzle.

With care and clever masking techniques even spray cans can produce an award winning finish, and these days they can form an important part of any modeller’s arsenal, even with experienced airbrush users.
