The day-to-day internal dialogue was that they were less than, and they equated dyslexia with low intelligence.

There are many aspects of school that can be traumatizing, but it is the constant day-to-day failure to meet expectations and public humiliation that cause the most harm. These are totally avoidable if the education community takes note of them. Many students who don’t respond to school interventions are labeled as “poor responders.” Students who don’t learn to read at the same rate as their non-dyslexic peers are labeled “late bloomers.” If you look at this more rationally, it is so obvious that it is the education system that is the poor responder and the late bloomer.
