As part of the U.S. basketball team during the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, David helps block a 2-point shot by China’s Fengwu San. The U.S. won 108-57.

“Tell me one thing,” David would say to his friends after he came back from one of his outings in the world of celebrity. “Tell me if I ever change, if my head ever starts to get bigger.”

But David got a dose of humility the next year when he went to the Olympic trials. His job hadn’t given him much time to work out, and for almost a year he’d had no chance to compete against top-notch basketball players. David’s skills were so rusty that people again wondered what was wrong with him.

When he averaged only 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds a game during the Olympics themselves, and the coach failed to play him in the deciding minutes of the semifinal loss to the Soviet Union, more people began to question both David’s skills and his commitment to basketball. Would he even be able to play at the professional level after another year away from the game?

David had his own doubts. For a long time, he blamed himself for his U.S. team ending up with a bronze rather than a gold medal.

Would he disappoint the people in San Antonio, too?
