Since institutions and bureaucracies move at a snail’s pace, advocates and allies will also frequently need to balance patience with sincere and ongoing efforts to obtain the necessary accommodation(s), modification(s), technology (technologies), treatment(s), inclusion, etc.

The authority of Autistic experience

While Autistic students must clearly abide by certain school rules that protect all members of the community, they must never be forced to participate in therapies or other activities that diminish their humanity and self-worth; nor should they be subjected to bullying from fellow students or school employees who believe they know better what Autistic people need than Autistic people themselves (or their families). Truly inclusive schools enable all students to feel accepted, understood, and safe enough to learn and thrive.

Sadly, Autistic students, along with their advocates and allies, may still find that they face stereotyped thinking and outdated ideas about autism. This is a key area where #ActuallyAutistic voices have so much to contribute. Extrapolating from the previous chapters to the specifics of schools, we can clearly see that Autistic students have certain generally shared fundamental rights and desires.
