As Spolsky (2008) comments, frameworks of descriptor scales need to be able to describe the complex profiles of a wide range of different plurilingual proficiency profiles for different (types of) learners. With its wide range of descriptor scales (50 in 2001; 80 in 2018) this is precisely what the CEFR provides.

Earlier versions of the ELP encouraged learners to record their proficiency in all the communicative activities in each language one after another (see Figure 5.3).

However, more recently, plurilingual graphic profiles are starting to be used. For example, Figure 5.4 profiles listening across several languages. In an ELP, this would be followed by profiles for reading, spoken interaction, spoken production, etc. Such profiles can raise awareness of plurilingual competence.
