CHAPTER 9

Keegan crumpled the anonymous note in his hand, balling it up and hurling it across the room with a snap of his arm. It caught the cold glare of the morning sun when it landed on the floor next to Sloan, who sat across from him. The hell he’d allow anyone to threaten Marty’s well-being. No matter how crazy she made him.

“Whoever did this better hope I don’t find them,” he warned with a hiss. His chest was tight with anger, every muscle in his body poised to do some damage.

Sloan picked up the note and glanced at it, his brow furrowing. “Any idea who dropped that little bomb?” he asked him from the other side of his desk.

When Keegan had arrived at Pack today, a letter, unsigned, lying folded on his desk, awaited him. His already bad mood had plummeted. “I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and guess it’s someone from the Lunar Council who doesn’t approve of Marty. Self-righteous assholes,” he muttered. “They threatened her life on paper, for Christ’s sake. If one hair on her head is harmed—I’ll see someone in hell.” His temper flared, boiling hot.

“I’d bet it was Alana. She’s not exactly thrilled about this Marty thing. Everyone knows she was supposed to be your mate.”

“Alana was hot to own a part of Pack, not me, and ask me if I give a fuck what she wants,” Keegan growled, narrowing his eyes in his brother’s direction.

Sloan held up his hands in defeat. “Hey, big brother. Take that stick out of your ass. I’m all about whatever you want, but you know the council. Marty’s an outsider, and they’re afraid of what could happen if, in her fear of the unknown, she reveals us. We definitely don’t need that kind of shit hitting the fan.”

He clamped his teeth together, flicking the stack of papers on his desk. “It’s not like I don’t know that, Sloan. And the council might want to keep in mind, Marty’s a werewolf now, too. Our secret is officially her secret. But she’s not at fault here. I am. Any result of that is on me.”

“I know.” He began to cackle with laughter, slapping his hand on his thigh. “And it’s a pretty awesome fuckup. Nothing I’ve done compares to this. Even I’m still impressed.”

Sloan’s joking was meant to be good-natured, but today, and after last night with Marty, it was rubbing him the wrong way.

“I’m glad I could offer some amusement,” Keegan said distractedly, staring out the tall glass windows of his office.

“Dude, you did it bigger than I ever could. This will go down in were history.”

“Dude, enough!” He wasn’t going to put up with Sloan’s flippant crap today.

Especially not today.

“What the hell is wrong with you? Usually you’re cranky, but Jesus, Keegan, you’re off the charts since this thing happened with Marty. What’s up with that?”

Keegan ran a hand over his chin and sighed. “I don’t know. She drives me insane.”

Sloan nodded his head, all knowing.
