When you proofread your first draft, look for the phrases from this section, and see if you can rewrite your sentence without them.

Transforming relative clauses

Sometimes we can reduce the length of sentences that contain relative clauses. We can do this in two main ways: by reducing the relative clause, or by using adjectives instead. Look at these examples:

The apparatus included a metal bucket which was positioned on a wooden surface.

Many plants which are growing in people’s gardens can be used for medicinal purposes.

A species of bacteria which has been recently discovered appears to be able to consume metal. ⇨ A recently discovered species of bacteria appears to be able to consume metal.
