ADVANCED PIECING TECHNIQUES

The next four blocks are more challenging. The Inner City block is a half-hexagon design that relies on thoughtful color and value placement to achieve a three-dimensional effect. The Bargello block also uses color and value to create waves of pattern. The Kansas Troubles and School House blocks involve many different sizes of small pieces. Cut, sew, and arrange colors carefully, and you will be rewarded with beautiful blocks.

The Inner City block uses strip piecing, a template, and a new technique: set-in seams. Don’t get scared off; you can do this. You will be instructed to make the block a bit larger than needed to give you a bit of fudge room when trimming down to a 10½˝ × 10½˝ square. This is a great block for using up scraps.
