Intense Heat Scorches the Planet—Bowl 4 (16:8–9)

The fourth bowl of wrath involves a series of flares from the sun that heat the earth like a furnace. Revelation 16:8–9 says,

The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.

This is ultimate global warming. Apparently the sun experiences solar flares and bursts of electromagnetic radiation that scorch people and perhaps also cause radio blackouts and further disruptions of technology.

All these plagues are warnings to motivate people toward repentance while time remains, but people no longer seem responsive to the gospel. The solar disruptions and intense heat, again, create problems for the military forces converging on Israel. Imagine the fury of the foul-mouthed Antichrist as he tries to cope with these cascading disasters. He is supernaturally empowered by Satan, but Satan’s power has its limits.

The Old Testament ends with a reference to this particular plague. Malachi 4:1 says, “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire.”
