Spring is the time when young plants are everywhere, and seedlings are moved to their own individual pots.

Textbooks and online searches will specify the correct sowing depth for seeds or the correct spacing for garlic cloves and onion bulbs, and this is a good place to start. But the garden will normally cut you some slack. My eldest son (aged two and a half at the time) decided to scatter some parsnip seeds over a row of strawberries in our garden in early summer. Parsnips are notoriously difficult to get to germinate, he didn’t prepare the soil before sowing or follow any rules, and the last time I checked, there wasn’t anyone recommending sowing parsnips on top of the nearest strawberry plants. But lo and behold, soon enough there were a few parsnip plants among the strawberries, putting up with their strange bedfellows!

This is the time to enjoy the process. Relish the moment when there are so many crops that can be started into life, and remember what we learned at the beginning: that plants want to grow. If they could talk, they would be cheering you on, every step of the way.
