“It was therefore impossible that [the disciples] could have persisted in affirming the truths they have narrated, had not Jesus actually risen from the dead, and had they not known this fact as certainly as they knew any other fact . . . The resurrection of Christ is the most verifiable fact of ancient history.”

—Simon Greenleaf, founder of Harvard School of Law, after thorough investigation of whether or not Christ rose from the dead4

No, the early disciples of Jesus were sane—but they were somehow transformed. In a matter of days, these cowards became fearless men, willing to die for the sake of what they’d seen. In fact, one of the disciples, Peter, is said to have been crucified upside-down at his own request, because he did not consider himself to be worthy of crucifixion in the same way Jesus was crucified!

How do we account for such physical and moral courage if the body was stolen? Not a single disciple ever changed his story. Each was willing to die for the truth that Jesus, the Son of God and Savior of the world, actually lived, died and rose again. Their lives, and the manner of their deaths, are powerful testimonies to the truth of the claims of Jesus.

Finally, we must bear in mind one obvious question: If this was indeed a fraud set up by the disciples (or whoever else theorists blame), how can we explain the numerous appearances of Jesus after His death? Christ didn’t just appear to His disciples; He was seen on different occasions by Paul, James, a small group of people . . . even 500 “brethren” at once (see sidebar). Can you imagine trying to convince 500 people to all tell the same lie? To account for this, some additional—and far-reaching—theory would have to be tacked on.
