4.2.1.c.4 Codex 565

Produced in the ninth century and housed at the Russian National Library in Saint Petersburg, Codex 565 is another of the earliest extant minuscules. It is a deluxe copy of the Gospels, with purple-stained parchment and gold writing and ornamentation.78 It has quite a few readings that align with the Caesarean textual grouping, but it often agrees with the Alexandrian manuscripts and is known for having readings that are otherwise unknown.79

4.2.1.c.5 Codex 1739

This tenth-century manuscript contains Acts as well as the Pauline and Catholic Epistles, and it is kept at the Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos.80 Besides being an excellent example of the Alexandrian textual grouping, Codex 1739 is important for notes made by the scribe, a monk named Ephraim,81 in the margins, quoting early church fathers (none later than Basil, who was mid-fourth century) and offering variant readings. The careful work of Ephraim, the age of the marginal quotations, and the quality of the biblical text suggest that the 1739 faithfully reproduces a much older exemplar.
