CHAPTER 8

TIME ROBBERS, TIME REBELS

Kids are chronically short of time, and they push back. They stay up late and sneak in moments of respite, which often include phoning, texting, messaging, posting, blogging. Kids are short of time because adults steal it from them. There is an economy of time, which is finite. It could be said that exploiting people can involve controlling their time use, the hours they otherwise have available to live a free life. All adolescents and their parents understand that the waking hours are challenging because everyone stayed up too late and school starts too early. There is too much to do, too little time to do it.

Adults rob kids of time and kids try to wrestle it back. They rebel against time robbery in these ways:

•

They stay up late, even past their parents’ bed times.

•

They sleep in and struggle to get up for school.

•

They postpone homework and other assignments until the last minute, if these get done at all.

•

They defy school authority by skipping class, arriving late, and using inclass, hallway, lunchroom, and playground time for texting, messaging, chatting—against school rules.

•

They engage in schoolwork slowdowns, dawdling over in-class work and tests.

•

They violate the nighttime curfews imposed by their parents.

•

They pretend to be doing schoolwork and homework when in fact they are texting.
