Beetles, stumpwork embroidery by Jane Nicholas.

Hand-stitched butterfly

This intricately designed and drawn student’s butterfly has been realised in stitch, finely and with love. It is an example of sustained and neat lines of hand stitching coming through to create a multi-layered and beautiful object. The vibrant colours reflect the student’s travels through Central America.

Hand-embroidered butterfly on digitally printed fabric.

Inspired by Louise Bourgeois

Smaller pieces are an effective way of isolating insects, as can be seen in this folding book embroidered cover. Free-motion embroidery was used for the piece.

Louise Bourgeois was a French-American sculptor, printmaker and artist who created political and symbolic artworks. I was very moved by an exhibition of her textile work at Hauser & Wirth Gallery in London a few years ago, and I was inspired to create two works ‘in homage’ to it (shown opposite). They both feature insects, but are used in different ways. My LB is a piece using fragments of illustrations taken from my Bernina sewing-machine manual, combined with butterflies and illustrations of trees. The separate pieces were patched and appliquéd together. The whole piece was then bound, backed and overstitched. The title is a play on the name ‘Louise Bourgeois’ but also an ode to my ‘lovely Bernina’, using vintage images of sewing machines.
