Siphonaria pectinata (Linnaeus, 1758)

Striped False Limpet

Distribution: Florida, Texas; Mexico; Caribbean.

Size: 27 mm (1 in).

Description: Color of numerous closely spaced white ridges, separated by many crowded brownish grooves that separate into 2 branches toward the margin; inner area glossy with brownish coloration bleeding through. Shell shape limpetlike. Sculpture of many crowded, alternating radial ridges and grooves, with margin finely crenulate. Aperture subcircular. Habitat: Intertidal. Epifaunal on algae-covered rocks and other hard substrates. Remarks: Common on Texas coast jetties. The shell resembles a true limpet but does not have a hole on the top of the caplike shell.
