Chapter 1 – Stephen Austin and the Founding of the Texas Rangers

It is difficult to imagine the early history of this famous (sometimes infamous) organization. Started by an American who had settled in Texas following Mexico’s invitation to the Americans to settle the lands, it was meant to provide the kind of protection that was lacking in settlements outside of US territories as the Spanish, then the Mexicans, largely left the settlers to protect themselves.

The American who founded the Texas Rangers was Stephen Fuller Austin. Today, he is known as the Father of Texas, in part because of his role in helping Texas rebel against Mexico but also because of his dedication to ensuring the settlers who lived in the future US state were safe.
