STEP-BY-STEP

1. Carefully clean the interior and exterior of the jar. If necessary, trim the plants so that their foliage does not touch the wall of the jar. Soak the bases of the plants in filtered water for 5 minutes so that each root ball is well moistened.

2. Gently pour an even layer of the red volcanic stone into the bottom of the jar. Be careful not to damage the glass.

3. Pour a layer with half the fine black gravel along the edge inside the jar.

4. Pour the planting mix evenly over the volcanic stones and the gravel, making a bed about 4 in/10 cm deep.

5. Make two small wells in the soil deep enough for the roots of the plants. Gently loosen the roots. Place the Ficus in the center and the Fittonia to the side, then gently press down the soil around them.

6. Water the soil evenly at the base of the plants with filtered water, using a plant mister (or soak a sponge and gently squeeze it over the soil).

7. Lay the rest of the fine black gravel over the soil around the plants.

8. Set the pieces of slate in the gravel, lightly pressing them in.

9. Cover the rest of the soil with the mosses, letting them touch the glass.

10. Close the jar after 48 hours. Take care of the terrarium following the advice on pages 20–27.

This is a very popular ficus for bonsai. Easy to care for, it is quite hardy and adapts easily to life in a terrarium.
