Chapter Eleven

“Why?” Hasefi glared at the stars above her. “Why did you let this happen?”

Silence met her and she curled her claws deep into the snow.

“Why won’t you answer me? Who else was talking to me during all those moons I was alone? Was it you playing some cruel joke? Or was it my tribe? Did you stop them? Or maybe they realized what you did and abandoned you? Answer me!” With an angry snarl, Hasefi clawed at the rock in front of her, hardly noticing the pain as she wrenched her claws. She let out a long sigh and sat, her head hanging. The fact that anything could pounce on her at any moment and take her away didn’t even make her ears twitch.

But if I were killed, I’d never get the chance to make the wolves pay, she pointed out to herself. With another sigh, she lifted her head and glared at the snow around her, daring something to try and attack her. I have enough anger inside of me to fight a mountain lion. She stood and turned to look into the large cave behind her. She could just barely see Kolahn’s outline and saw that his paws were over his ears.

He hasn’t said a word to me since this morning. Is he afraid I’ll do something? She felt a tiny sliver of guilt. I’m not sure I wouldn’t. And yet he’s still with me. Poor wolf. He doesn’t know where else to go. Her ears flattened. And neither do I. She sat down and hung her head again, finally feeling the mix of ice-cold fury and sun-hot rage settle into dark, hard misery.

I have absolutely nothing, she thought. My tribe is gone. The ancestors have abandoned me. And I may very well be the last living lynx in the world.

“Sefi?”

Hasefi gave no reaction to the wolf’s quiet voice. She remained hunched with her ears flat as he slowly crept out of the cave to sit in front of her.

“Sefi, I’m sorry.”

“For what?” she hissed. “You didn’t kill my tribe or lead me on some meaningless journey.”

The wolf flinched and Hasefi gritted her teeth. It’s not his fault. He doesn’t deserve this. She let out a sigh, forcing out some of her anger with it. She still couldn’t look at him, but she was able to keep her voice low and monotone when she spoke.

“Do you think ancestors could be evil?”

“Evil?” the wolf echoed as if the word itself embodied its namesake. “I don’t know. I don’t…think so.”

“Well, mine are.”

“What? What about Sefonis?”

“No, not my tribe. They would never let something like this happen if they could help it. But my ancestors never gave me anything. They just let my tribe die. They abandoned us. So I’ll do the same to them.”

“Maybe there’s something else,” the wolf tried, but Hasefi shook her head, refusing to listen to anything he would use to argue.

“The wolf that killed my uncle, he was the biggest of them all and I’m pretty sure he was the leader.
