Conga Line

Ezra and Lavinia stayed with Ana after I put my foot down that my sweet dad wouldn’t be exposed to anything that might warp his mind. Ezra put up the same argument for me, but Levi came down with the judgment that my mind was sufficiently damaged, and in need of healing. The fresher the flower, the better my chance of “getting well.” As if I was damaged. As if I needed an intervention. Give me a freaking break.

Danny cracked his neck as we stood on the edge of the forest, looking at the thick knotted trees that seemed too close together for the root systems not to be choking each other out. The leaves had spiky edges on them that looked like gnarled fingers aching to grab at intruders. If any forest was cursed, I’d put my money on this being the obvious choice.

This did not deter Danny, who was psyched to do something more harrowing than diaper duty. “Do we have enough baga root for a few days? I don’t want to get in there and have to turn around because this one can’t breathe.” Danny jerked his thumb at me, as if I was a wuss for having limits like, you know, needing usable oxygen. Jag.

Mason, Von and Levi all nodded, patting their packs. “I’ve got enough for three days for her and Judge,” Von volunteered.

“Two days,” Mason offered.

“I packed enough to last a week for October, Judge, Ollie and Darius,” Levi said gravely.

Judge wasn’t fond of that little restriction when traveling to Terraway, so he bumped his fist to Mason’s and Von’s. “Thanks, guys. Appreciate it.” He inclined his chin to Levi. “Dad.”

“Of course, Son.”

There was a gold haze that hung in the air of the forest I noticed when I peered through the branches. It seemed to hold itself up to just an inch or two above my height, never venturing lower. Levi addressed the oddity before we stepped inside. “Whatever you do, keep low. You won’t like what happens if you breathe in too much of that stuff,” he warned, pointing to the gilded fog. “Best keep your head from touching the golden air altogether.”

Danny moved to stand beside Levi. It was clear he was chomping at the bit to rejoin guard duty. “Keep behind us,” he instructed me. “Mason, stay behind October. Von, Judge, you’re at her sides.”

I rolled my eyes. “Guys, I’ve fought against a zombie army. I can handle a hike through the woods. I’m not fragile.” I worried they’d already latched onto the actress’ wilted flower impersonation of me, and now assumed I was useless.

Danny turned, taking out the machete he’d borrowed in preparation for the journey. “Fragile has nothing to do with it. We’re good at our jobs, is all. If Levi wants you to have a flower straight from the ground, we can make that happen.”

Von held my hand while Judge drew his gun. Of course he had a gun on him. “Where did you get that? I thought I took your gun away.
