While all deep stories transform us, failed separation is particularly devastating when the primary outcome is the hoped-for transformation. We cannot easily love again what we have just attempted to destroy and recreate. When College as a deep story fails, (such as not finding rewarding work that validates and strengthens the hard-won adult social identity) young graduates may feel compelled to find themselves in other ways, perhaps through experiences such as backpacking on a different continent.

Even when the separation event is successful, a full return to the low entropy state that marks the initial liminal passage is rarely possible. Even if the world hails the creation, the creator is always aware of the compromises and imperfections that marred the separation event, due to the exhaustion-driven timing of the heavy lift, and the tragedy of expedience inherent in the cheap trick.

With the benefit of hindsight, the stable memory of the deep story, as well as a revised doctrine and self-archetype take shape during the retrospective. Whether your reconstructed memories are delusions or critical histories depends entirely on your capacity for honest introspection.

As the retrospective tapers off, once again we enter a liminal passage, where the experienced tempo slows to a near-standstill.
