Male babies get circumcised quite early on, less than two weeks old. It is recommended they get circumcised before they start rolling or moving their legs in order to help with recovery. The baby boy is also expected to have recovered in time for his christening.

The concept of ‘postpartum depression’ is unknown within the Tigray culture. Initially, I had attributed that to the culture not being expressive, but it might be the result of new mothers being given so much support and space to bond with their child without the stress of partaking in all the other household duties. There aren’t pressures on the mother beyond attending to her child, and she has around-the-clock support as she undertakes this role at least until the baby’s christening.

Children are christened at 40 days for boys and at 80 days for girls, with their hair shaved. They are given a church name, usually after the saint’s day of their christening, and are given a single godparent of the same gender. Godparents are charged with being their spiritual mentors.
