The Opportunity to Offer Them A Second Chance

I maintain an unconditional love for all animals. I do not make a hierarchy between my companions. Each one occupies a very special place in my heart. I love my two little ewes, Frisette and Bigoudi, and my pigs, Cochonnet and Jambonneau—whose appearance amuses me quite a bit—but also my goats, my mare, and my little donkey. Over the years, my house in Saint-Tropez has become a refuge for animals who have been mistreated by life. My foundation, which protects and saves creatures every day, cannot treat every single tragic case. For more complicated situations, my team asks for my help because I have so many resources at my disposal: time, patience, love, and compassion. The animals who are given to me always have interesting stories. I welcome the sick, the broken, the old, the afraid, and the traumatized because nobody wants them, because they have been condemned to a miserable end of life. My donkey, Bonhomme, had been brutalized, showered with blows in the first years of his existence, and he continues to be wary of human beings, to such an extent that it is still sometimes difficult for me to approach him. We have known each other for ten years.

All of the animals who come and share my life have already been around the block a few times. I am always shocked to know that the creatures I take in have endured such mistreatment and torture. It’s as if I myself experienced these horrible things. I couldn’t possibly explain it, but I feel what they have been through, the evil they have been subjected to. Just as we observe in human beings, animal trauma exists and is very palpable. The suffering is still there; I can see it in their eyes. I offer these animals companionship and a new outlook. I try as much as possible to help them forget their past. I hope they forget, and that at some point they are unable to remember a single thing that was done to them. I don’t know if I manage to calm them the way they need to be. It’s not always possible. Some people from Annecy once gave me a little cat. She lived exclusively on the balcony of their apartment and always had an irrepressible desire to leave. She was also drawn by the void: she fell three floors down. Her bones were broken. Once she had healed, I adopted this fragile little creature. I offered her all the comfort she needed to rebuild herself, leaving the door open to meet her need for freedom, cuddling her, reassuring her . . . in vain. For four days, she stayed in a corner, not eating, not moving, hunched and completely unwilling to accept physical consolation. One day, I never saw her again. I don’t know what happened to her. This truly pained me, because I had not been able to repair the suffering that she must have been reliving on a constant basis.
