AO2 Elaboration Exercises

Assessment Objective 2 is meant to assess and so encourage the development of higher-level thinking skills. However, AO2 and higher-level thinking are not synonymous. While it is probably necessary to think deeply about psychological material to gain high AO2 marks, some marks can be gained by brief, superficial and formularised comments. One way to encourage psychological thinking that directly impacts both proximally on AO2 marks and distally on thinking skills is to elaborate AO2 answers. A useful strategy to begin this process can be to deny students the tools for producing formulaic answers. Thus the term ‘ecological validity’, which is – sometimes indiscriminately – scattered throughout A-level exams without elaboration, may be best not introduced until students have a thorough understanding of the significance of the environment in which studies are conducted.
