The group discussed the fact that these questions were in the procedures with connections tasks, as they required some explanations, requiring students to do more higher-level thinking.

Ms. Heller continued with why they would use the task they selected (Lesson 15 in Illustrative Mathematics, Grade 7, Probability and Sampling, Estimating Measures of Center; Lesson 15.3 “Who’s Watching What?”). She shared that she liked that the questions required students to estimate, something that sometimes made her students uncomfortable. Additionally, it required them to analyze data, a higher-order skill. What I like [is that] it asks them to do some estimation, which I know they feel really uncomfortable with sometimes. And I think, it’s asking them to do that…And, then, it makes them have to think about why they might see this data. Like…there’s a 60-year old watching this “Learning to Read.” Why might that happen? Huh, maybe the little kid was watching with their grandma. Oh, maybe a 60-year old just moved to this country and is learning a different language. “Learn How to Read” [the problem] is actually making our kids think through those things [and this] is something I don’t think they get to do too often, and it does this problem solving skills.
