A sample student essay is shown in Figure 5.6. The example shows excellent control of syntax and diction. It also shows the markers of emerging proficiency in academic argumentation. Both this essay and the one on gender and toys by the same thirteen-year-old writer (Figure 5.4) flip-flop a bit—a classic sign of a writer who’s just beginning to learn how to negotiate multiple perspectives and address counterarguments. As she matures in this genre, this student will be able to more skillfully signal her own position on an issue when citing other writers.
