Warm-Up

15. Say, “Each day we will start with a few sentences as warm-ups. We will do the warm-ups out loud. Then we will learn a new way to change sentences, and you will get to change some sentences on paper first with me and then with each other.”

16. Say, “There are all kinds of ways good writers combine sentences. Today we will start to learn how to put sentences together with words you can use to stick two short sentences together. These words will help you write your sentences in different ways and will help make your sentences more interesting.”

17. Set out the warm-up sentence sheet for this lesson (Figure 10.3). Cover all but the first set of sentences. Read the first sentence and model how to combine. Then explain how the word in parentheses is a clue they can use to put the two short sentences together. Explain that the words that are underlined must be included in the new sentence. Then ask for a volunteer to read the next pair of sentences aloud. Ask for ideas on how to put the sentences together by using the clue. Praise the effort. (If the volunteer cannot provide an example, ask another student. If both are stuck, provide an example and move to the next pair of sentences.)

18. Write down one really good example from each student.

19. Finish the warm-up sentences.

20. Ask the students, “How are we able to do what we’ve been doing? How do we know how to put the sentences together?” Prompt them to say that we do it by:

a. Using connecting words (words that help fit

two sentences together).
