Cotton candy melted in my mouth as I pointed to another belly dropping ride. “That one. We need to do that one before the day is over.”

Kaiden’s hand on my lower back guided me to the long line. Craning my neck, I saw Amara and Beckett walking in our direction. She was holding a little panda, and although her lips weren’t lifted in a smile to match the Golden Boy’s grin, her cheeks were stained a rosy pink.

“What do we have here?” I asked, beaming down at my friend. Next to Beckett, Amara’s bite appeared less intense. First, he totally downgraded her kick-ass factor by a billion, as he literally dwarfed her. Beckett wasn’t a small man—not even a little bit. But Amara was definitely one of the shortest people. On top of being itty-bitty in the height department, Amara was slender absolutely everywhere else. With her thick head of long dark hair that fell to the small of her waist, she looked even more tiny. And standing next to Golden Boy with muscles the size of their own country, her grizzly bear claws were downgraded to those of a stumbling, wide-eyed kitten.

“He won a bear.” Amara said dryly, shrugging. “No big deal.”

Beckett laughed as his warm eyes settled on Mar. “You wound me.”

“Your ego can take the hit, bud.” Amara teased, squeezing her panda. My brow lifted, but she shook her head in silent warning.

We definitely had some talking to do when we got home.

“Wanna ride?” I asked; pointing to the wild ride we were standing in line for.

Amara nodded. “Why not?”

“Yay!” I clapped my hands and the bag of pink and blue cotton candy shook. “Seriously, I might be twenty-three today, but being here reminds me that I’m still sixteen at heart.”

Kaiden chuckled, tucking my back against the front of his chest. My heart jumped at the contact and my cheeks flushed as Mom’s words came rushing back to infiltrate the whole of my mind. “You’ve always been a wild child.”

“Me?” I swung an incredulous look at him. “I’m no more wild than you.”

“I beg to differ.”

“Uh huh, Mr. Never Get Locked Down.”

“I never said that.”

“No,” Shaking my head, I muttered. “You just gave a subtle hint every time something more was suggested.”

“People change,” the low rumble of his hot voice in my ear was enough to make my entire body shiver.

Breathlessly, I whispered. “Have you?”

“I guess you’ll see.”

“I will?” My eyes bugged a little, but he didn’t reply. Instead, he tugged me through the gates and onto the ride.

As the ride lifted us off our feet to fling our bodies through the air, I couldn’t decipher if my belly was fluttering from the big machine I was riding, or the man who sat beside me.

By the time the sky started to darken and the rides lights were turned on, I was totally riding the carnival high. There was a sticky warm scent of deep-fried goodies and sugary drinks riding the warm evening air. Energy crackled as vibrant smiles painted the faces of those we passed, while laughter, chatter and music filled the space.
