CHAPTER FOUR

THIS WASN’T GOING to be some one-night stand like before. It was very clear that we both wanted more, there was no question about it. We couldn’t do anything on school grounds, it’d be way too risky. Not that we were breaking any laws, but it would be a problem for Ashby, considering he was here on recommendation.

I sat in my same spot in the back of the class with George, Mike, and Brad next to me, and tried my best to stay focused on the lesson. Ashby paced in front of his PowerPoint presentation on the French New Wave and spoke vigorously about how François Truffaut changed cinema forever. I’d scribbled “French people = good” on my notes and that was about it. My mind was in other places, making plans for how I could see him and when. I happened to glance over to the right, and watched as Brad tried to “discreetly” sneak a photo of Ashby with his cell phone. The shutter sound was on, and George and Mike both looked over and saw what he was doing before he could hide the phone in his pocket.

“Yo,” Mike hissed under his breath. “Were you taking a pic of Professor Wallace? Dude.”

“No,” Brad said. “I wasn’t. I was trying to…record the lecture. Yeah. Bro, come on. I’m not gay, bro.”

“Seriously, man?” I said.

“Was it a good picture?” George asked.

“I wasn’t taking a picture,” Brad protested. “For real.”

“Pfft.” Mike began making obscene stroking gestures with his hands. “We all know you’re fantasizing about sucking Professor Wallace’s huge, rock hard, veined, bulging—”

“No, that’s totally you, bro,” Brad said, smacking Mike’s thigh with his fist. “You want to do that. I learned about it in psych class, it’s called projecting, bro.”

“Projecting on your face, mother fuckaaa,” Mike muttered.

“You guys are fucking dumb,” I said. “Shut up.”

George cupped his hands over his mouth and whispered, “Yo, was it a good picture, though?”

“Excuse me!” Ashby was pointing at us, a stern look on his face. “You four, there. If you’re not interested in learning what I have to teach, then please leave.”

I held my palms up. “I didn’t…I wasn’t…”

“Mr. North. I expect an apology from you after class for this disruption and for robbing everyone of precious time listening to me drone on.”

Everyone was looking back at us now, grinning. I sank into my seat, face hot, but heart hammering with excitement. An apology after class? I could do that.

“Now, please,” he said. “Pay attention.”

At the end of the session, everyone got up and filed out of the lecture hall. George threw his arm around Brad’s shoulder and began harassing him about the photo. “My bad for getting you in trouble,” Mike said. “Thanks for taking one for the team, dude. Professor Wallace is pretty strict. I wasn’t expecting him to get pissed like that.”

“All good,” I said. “I don’t think he’s that mad.”

“See you next class, dude.”

He joined the others and soon the room was empty, except for me and Ashby.
