SCARF JOINTS

Hand-Cut Scarf Joint

To begin a hand-cut scarf joint, set the sliding bevel to an angle between 1:8 and 1:10, and mark out the boards (A, B).

Clamp the boards securely when making the sawcuts (C). If you stack the boards together when sawing, they will line up almost automatically (D).

To finish, clean up the cuts with a handplane (E).

[VARIATION] You can use a chopsaw to make the scarf cuts.

Scarf Joint with a Router

Scarf joints can be cut with a handheld router. Clamp the board to be scarfed in the scarf jig (A). The jig’s sides are angled at the proper degree for scarf joints. A plunge router rides in a carriage that rests on top of the angled sides.
