Chapter Twelve

Pierce…

While Chloe was singing less at home, my assistant was humming a lot lately. It had me worried; what was wrong with my lady and what was going on with Hannah? I figured the latter behavior had to do with a certain Englishman. Especially when my daily schedule included afternoon tea complete with a proper tea pot with matching cup and saucer along with either finger sandwiches or pastry, sometimes both. This new activity finally made me realize that Hannah had been bringing fine china and linens into the office from her own private collection to serve me coffee. If I had it my way, she would never retire or at least not until I did. But lately, with her even more uplifted attitude and gifts that kept appearing—the latest a tea cart—in the private waiting area outside of my office door, her Englishman had me worried.

And if I wasn’t worried about Hannah’s departure, Chloe had me questioning what I was doing wrong. Was she unhappy living together? I thought everything was great. I racked my brain trying to think if I had done anything different, but kept coming up empty-handed and it had me wondering if something had happened at the museum or the godforsaken club. Maybe it was time to have Hannah do a bit of eavesdropping around the employee lounge, the museum was an easy fix. The club was a whole other matter. I knew she loved to sing and I couldn’t take that away from her, maybe I could find another place for her to share her talents. But what if she didn’t want to leave that fucking place? Gram! Yes, he was the one that got Nick and I into the club with the help of his chef friend. Perhaps a phone call could give me more insight as to what, if anything, was going on that would affect Chloe in some way. God, how I hoped that whatever had my songbird quiet was fixable and not something that I had done.

“Hey, who poured sour milk in your Cheerios?” And there was Hannah, the sunshine that had brightened my work days lately. “I just delivered your late slip to Ms. Erikksen. Boy, did she ever light up when she saw that.”

“Really?” I sounded like a teenage boy asking if a girl he passed a note to liked him. “Did she say anything?”

“Sorry, I didn’t actually get to give it to her, but I saw her from a distance through a glass wall. She was in a conference room.”

Shaking my head with a slight smile I thanked her.

“I hope in the note you invited her for tea today. I have special mini scones, clotted cream and a fresh homemade apricot curd to go with a lovely tea.” She didn’t wait for my answer but simply left me to my thoughts after telling me that everything would be ready at four o’clock and that she would be leaving early to go run work and some of my personal errands.
