The Memorial Day celebration at Thomas and Angel’s house was hectic with so many people there, and Thad was glad it was a beautiful day and that most everyone was outside. He stayed close to Zoe, but she held her own and surprisingly remembered almost everyone’s name. She forgot Levi’s kids’ names, Valentine and Vance, but then again, maybe she never knew them.

Thomas had invited all the brothers and their families, as well as Aunt Cappy and Charlie and the Ainsleys too. At Angel’s insistence, Natasha Okulov joined them as well since her husband was out of town on business and she’d be alone otherwise.

They’d grilled chicken and burgers outdoors and just finished eating. The kids were going for rowboat rides with Clarence Ainsley while his wife, Agnes, helped with the dishes.

“I think I’d like to help with dishes too,” said Zoe getting out of the lawnchair, but Aunt Cappy walked over and stopped her. Natasha was with her.

“Zoe, this zucchini bread is the best I’ve ever tasted,” said Aunt Cappy. “I heard you made it.”

“I did, Aunt Cappy. And I’m glad you like it.”

“Zoe makes bakery for me in exchange for craniosacral sessions,” Natasha told them using her broken English. “Me enjoy bakery, and gain ten pounds in last week.”

“You know, you might want to talk to Agnes Ainsley about helping her at her new bakery shop,” said Aunt Cappy.

“Oh, I don’t think so,” said Zoe, and Thad could see she was just being self-conscious.

“I think it would be a great idea,” said Thad. “You have a true talent for baking, and seem to love it.”

“But I have too much to do right now,” said Zoe. “I’m still taking care of things from my father’s death and haven’t even had time to go through his apartment above the laundromat yet.”

“I’ll help you do that next week if you want,” offered Aunt Cappy.

“That would be nice. Thank you.”

“Outta the way, outta the way, woman in labor coming through!” Judas shouted, running from the house toward the squad.

“What’s going on?” asked Zoe.

“It must be Laney,” said Aunt Cappy. “Lord knows the girl is overdue and as big as a house.

Judas opened the door of the squad then ran back to get Laney. She came out holding her hands on her stomach and Thad knew that look on her face was one of pain.

There was a crowd around them, all helping her get to the squad car.

“Laney, are you all right?” asked Zoe, making her way toward the car using her cane to guide her. Thad grabbed onto her arm and walked with her since there was now not only people and kids everywhere, but John’s son, Gareth, came over with a half dozen sled dogs that were chasing Thomas’s two dogs around the yard, barking.

“Do you want to take my van?” asked Thomas. “There’s more room in there.”

“No, I can put the lights on in the squad and get there faster this way,” Judas told him.

They were just about to leave when Levi ran out of the house waving his arms in the air like the place was on fire.
