I’m probably acting like ______________ right now, and I can appreciate how disturbing that might be for you.
Take your pick: the sadistic older brother…the cute attention-seeking younger sister…that lecherous uncle who wore a toupee…the ex who embarrassed you publicly…the ex who whined when you wouldn’t have sex with them…the ex who spent evenings communing with their BlackBerry…the stepmother who treated you like a second-class citizen…the stepfather who was always so needy…the arrogant sibling or the condescending boss…the grandparent who preferred the brother who played the violin…The list is endless.
This card was originally designed for all the secondary characters, after parents, around whom you or your partner could have “transference” reactions. However, left to their own devices, users of these Flash Cards for Real Life have gotten rather creative: “I’m probably acting like [a horse’s ass…the Wicked Witch…Simon Cowell…Mother Superior] right now, and I can appreciate how disturbing that might be for you.”
However you fill in this flash card—and with flash card #52 following this, we have provided a second opportunity to fill in the blank—the beauty of this intervention is that you are taking it upon yourself to imagine how you might be seen by your partner. Even if he says, “Don’t kid yourself, babe—not the Wicked Witch…we’re talking more Saddam Hussein here…” something has been cracked and melted between you. There is definitely something to this taking responsibility stuff. To self-observe and show your partner you are genuinely interested in how they might be experiencing you…well, it might be worth it to acknowledge that you are starting to see the dictator or the martyr or the drama queen that lives in you.
