SEVENTEEN

“All right, spill it.”

Laura lets out an exasperated sigh as she closes the office door behind her.

Theresa’s already at her desk. She folds her hands, resting them demurely in front of herself, a smug look on her face. “So, Austin, huh? I’m guessing he’s the reason for your giddy schoolgirl impersonation?”

Laura pulls her messenger bag over her head and plops it on the floor beside her desk, careful to keep the coffee in her hand from spilling. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re just friends.”

Theresa scoffs. “Yeah. Right.”

“What? We are.” At least, I think we are. There have been no discussions of putting any kind of label on what they’re doing, and if Laura has her way, they will stay firmly rooted in the friend stage. Even if it is Friends with Benefits. Anything more than that, and it all goes to crap.

“We’ll see about that.” Theresa leans forward, a shrewd look on her face. “So. Who is he?”

“Marge’s neighbor.”

“He from around here?”

“Nope.”

“Is he a good guy?”

Laura tries to keep her features schooled, but is unable to fully bite back her smile. “Yeah.”

“Ha! I knew it! You do like him!”

“Well, duh. Of course, I like him. He’s my friend.”

Theresa huffs. “You are so stubborn. Just admit it. You like him. You want to have hot, nasty sex with him.”

Laura’s eyes skitter away from her receptionist and Theresa’s eyes widen. “Oh, my God! You have had hot, nasty sex with him!”

Laura clamps her lips shut.

Theresa crows in delight. “Best. Day. Ever!”

“Oh, shut up.”

Theresa rolls her eyes. “Now, while I fully support you getting out of your slump, I do have to mention the elephant in the room.”

Laura crosses her arms and waits for Theresa to continue.

“The crutches. You’re not on some crusade to save some stranger because you couldn’t save Steven, are you?”

Laura opens her mouth, full of righteous indignation. She quickly closes it again. Not like that thought hasn’t crossed my mind, too. While at first, it was the similarities between the two of the them that drew her to Austin, it’s now so much more. His sense of humor. His ability to keep up with her snark. His ability to make her feel normal again.

“Maybe? At the very beginning?” But I think now he might be saving me.
