• Some children able to retell very quickly – do not underestimate their capabilities.

• Children’s confidence built rapidly.

• Parents showing an interest and asking what is happening, as children are going home retelling and talking about the stories.

• Evidence in children’s play of them independently retelling or using memorable phrases and vocabulary from the stories. This is especially noticeable where props, toys and costumes from the story are made available.

• Increased use of language.

• The process helps struggling children engage and make progress.

• You can see the impact of the stories in the children’s use of language but also in their cooperative play. They are more likely to play together because they have a common, imaginative experience to engage in and manipulate through play.

• Children choose to re-enact and play at the story.

• Many children choose to change the story quite naturally and playfully, innovating through play. It helps to provide a story box or bag with alternative characters, etc.
