Understanding the functionality of these types of networks is an important task of CSB, but because they cannot be observed directly, they must be inferred from data with methods of ML (Chapter 4). The key step of a computational network inference is a sophisticated statistical analysis of data indicating that certain genes are co-expressed, which means they are transcribed into RNA under the same or similar conditions, such as heat, pressure, or exposure to some chemical in the case of a bacterial cell. If the same two genes are often co-expressed or silenced at the same time, the hypothesis is that they are controlled by the same transcription factor(s) and regulator(s). A validation of this statistically inferred regulation is often the discovery that the two genes contain the same short initial DNA sequence, to which the transcription factors and other regulators bind.
